Why WCK? As part of our 2020 Book Club, we read José Andrés’s We Fed an Island and decided to support his efforts feeding people who are in dire situations.

WCK is a humanitarian nonprofit founded in 2010 by chef José Andrés with the core purpose of providing immediate, freshly prepared meals to people affected by disasters, conflicts, and crises. Its mission emphasizes rapid response, local collaboration, and dignity through food, positioning meals not only as sustenance but also as a form of relief and stability during emergencies.

Since late 2025, WCK’s operations have scaled significantly in both scope and sophistication. In 2025 alone, the organization served over 130 million meals across thousands of communities worldwide, responding to climate disasters, armed conflicts, and economic disruptions. Its operational model relies heavily on partnering with local chefs, restaurants, and volunteers—described as “locals feeding locals”—which enables faster deployment and culturally appropriate meals.

A major focus since late 2025 has been large-scale humanitarian crises, particularly in Gaza and Ukraine. In Gaza, WCK has delivered hundreds of millions of meals, along with water and essential supplies, while expanding kitchen networks and infrastructure as conditions allowed. The organization adapted to shifting conditions such as border closures and ceasefires, improving consistency in meal delivery and increasing reach into previously inaccessible areas.

WCK has also remained active in disaster relief globally. In early 2026, it responded to hurricanes in the Caribbean (serving millions of meals in Jamaica), floods in Colombia, wildfires in Chile, and winter storms across the United States. These responses demonstrate its ability to operate simultaneously across multiple regions.

Additionally, WCK has expanded beyond emergency feeding into recovery-oriented initiatives, such as supporting farmers, rebuilding local food systems, and establishing community kitchens.

Overall, since late 2025, WCK has reinforced its role as a fast, adaptive, and globally coordinated food relief organization, combining immediate aid with longer-term community resilience strategies.

Sue Stuart-Smith

A distinguished psychiatrist and avid gardener presents “a truly uplifting book on the power of gardening—and how it can change people’s lives” – (Stylist, UK).

The garden is often seen as a refuge, a place to forget worldly cares, removed from the “real” life that lies outside. When we get our hands in the earth we connect with the cycle of life in nature through which destruction and decay are followed by regrowth and renewal. Gardening is one of the quintessential nurturing activities and yet we understand so little about it. The Well-Gardened Mind provides a new perspective on the power of gardening to change people’s lives. Here, Sue Stuart-Smith investigates the many ways in which mind and garden can interact and explores how the process of tending a plot can be a way of sustaining an innermost self.

Stuart-Smith’s own love of gardening developed as she studied to become a psychoanalytic psychotherapist. From her grandfather’s return from World War I to Freud’s obsession with flowers to case histories with her own patients to progressive gardening programs in such places as Rikers Island prison in New York City, Stuart-Smith weaves thoughtful yet powerful examples to argue that gardening is much more important to our cognition than we think. Recent research is showing how green nature has direct antidepressant effects on humans. “The most original gardening book ever [that] combines observation, horticulture, literature and history” (Sunday Times, UK), The Well-Gardened Mind is a book for gardeners and non-gardeners alike, and the perfect solace for people seeking healthier mental lives.

Join Slow Food Western Slope, Slow Food Boulder County, and Slow Food Denver for an immersive, live-streamed culinary journey. We are honored to host Chef Andrea Condes, a renowned Indigenous chef dedicated to bringing the flavors, history, and sovereignty of native foods into our modern home kitchens.

This isn’t just a cooking class—it’s an invitation to connect with ancestral memory, explore healthy food systems, and preserve cultural knowledge through the universal language of food.

The Menu: Trout has flourished in Colorado’s waters for centuries, and corn has remained a staple crop for Indigenous Peoples of the Americas since time immemorial. In this session, you will learn to prepare:

Trout Steamed in Corn Husk

Dandelion Pesto

Fresh Corn Pico

As we cook, Chef Andrea will lead a discussion on the cultural etymology and the vital importance of these key ingredients. You will get to trace the roots of what we are preparing & eating together by reclaiming the traditional foodways and flavors.

How It Works

Cook Along: One week before the class, you will receive a Recipe Pack containing a full recipe, a shopping list, and a resources page so you can source your ingredients and prepare to cook live with the chef as well as alternatives for allergens and options for foods that are more readily available.

Zoom link: The zoom link will be available a week prior. Please join at 6pm.

Lifetime Access: Can’t make the live stream? No problem. The class will be recorded and uploaded to the Slow Food Colorado platform as an archived resource for all ticket holders.

This collaboration between the Colorado Slow Food Chapters and Four Directions Cuisine aims to bridge communities. By sharing these traditional methods, we support food sovereignty and ensure that the wisdom of Indigenous culinary arts continues to thrive in our homes and hearts.

Tickets are limited and per computer. As many people as you like can gather in your kitchen with you. Reserve your spot at the table today!
