They\u00a0raise Scottish Highland beef cows, rare-breed chickens, pastured pigs, and have Akbash livestock guardian dogs to keep the mountain lions, bears, skunks and raccoons away from the animals and orchards.<\/p>\n<p>They\u00a0try to grow and raise almost all their\u00a0own food. What they\u00a0don\u2019t preserve, dry, can, freeze, over winter in the cold frames\/high tunnels, or store in the root cellar, they\u00a0sell on the non-profit online farmer\u2019s market LocalFarmsFirst.org that we founded in 2009 \u2013 now with over 50 local chemical-free growers.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1968\" src=\"http:\/\/slowfoodwesternslope.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/27FarmTour.jpg\" alt=\"27FarmTour\" width=\"960\" height=\"625\" srcset=\"https:\/\/slowfoodwesternslope.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/27FarmTour.jpg 960w, https:\/\/slowfoodwesternslope.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/27FarmTour-300x195.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>They\u00a0do most of the soil preparations for gardens by hand and with their\u00a0pigs, rotate their\u00a0cows daily, use their\u00a0chickens to fertilize and clean the orchards, save all their\u00a0own seed, grow their\u00a0own hay, render lard for oil and fat, make their\u00a0own cheese, juices, butter and wood-fired or solar-ovened bread, and hand harvest and thresh their\u00a0own grains.<\/p>\n<p>They\u00a0also have\u00a0a distillery permit to make their\u00a0own fuel, as well as providing the entertaining and tasty old spirit, AppleJack.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Alison Gannett grows & raises almost all her own food.
