One of Western Colorado’s fabulous women in food and wine is Wendy Mitchell of Avalanche Cheese.
Avalanche Cheese Company was founded to supply the restaurants and shops of the Roaring Fork Valley with beautiful, hand-crafted goat cheeses. Their products include pasteurized fresh cheeses and aged, raw milk cheeses. The milk comes from our Saanen, Alpine, and Nubian goats, who live in pasture on our 130-acre farm and dairy in Paonia, Colorado.
Paonia is an oasis of orchards, family farms, and small dairies nestled between McClure Pass and the town of Delta. By raising their animals in a humane way, on quality forage, they provide Avalanche with high-quality milk that they turn into delicious cheeses for their customers.
Avalanche Cheese was one of the 2015 Good Food Awards Winners! The winners were honored for leading the way towards a tasty, authentic and responsible food system. Chosen from 1,462 entrants, these 146 companies are creating vibrant, delicious, sustainable local food economies. Avalanche was recognized in 2 categories:
